PhD: Drivers of ocean movement patterns in Round Island petrels

My PhD is using a combination of spatial, demographic, genetic, and environmental data in order to investigate what is driving ocean movement patterns of Round Island petrels. I'm interested in how consistent (or, flexible) individual petrels are in their migratory movements between years and the consequences this has on individual fitness.

Storm-petrels on migration

For the past three years I have been helping coordinate the Storm-petrels in Portugal project. This project has been running since the early 1990s and involves catching and ringing the European storm-petrel Hydrobates pelagicus (by tape-luring to mist-nets) while the birds are passing Portugal on their northwards migration. This project runs every year between June and July, and is a partnership between A Rocha Portugal and Cardiff University.

For more information on the project, check out this video.

Research Associate, Cardiff University

After finishing my undergraduate degree, I was invited back to Cardiff University in order to carry out various research projects involving meta-barcoding to determine the diet of European nightjar (working with Cardiff University and the BTO), Pied flycatcher (Cardiff University), European storm-petrel (RSPB), and Madeiran storm petrel (Coimbra University).
